Dena's House

McLaren's House

Michael McLaren:
A former police detective with the Staffordshire Constabulary, McLaren tries to convince himself that he is perfectly happy repairing dry stonewalls in Derbyshire, a make-do career after resigning his job in an eddy of anger, disgust and an overwhelming sense of injustice. A friend of a murder victim succeeds where his former fiancée and friends failed, luring him into investigating a cold case that recharges his life. His childhood home in Somerley, near the Winnats, is an old stone building embraced by an ancient willow tree, daylilies and roses. A perfect spot to relax from the rigors of detective work and to concentrate on the two other loves in his life: his fiancée and singing folk music.

Dena Ellison:

A lover of classics - from cars and clothes to fine dining - Dena sticks by McLaren's side during the year of his hermit-like seclusion. She feels the pain and anger of the injustice done to him and wants to help him, yet the frustration of being shut out of his life threatens her resolve. She volunteers at an animal rescue facility and carries her passion for helping over to McLaren. Dena's eclectic tastes include fine wine, salads, veggies, fish and chocolate, but she also likes simple fare such as bangers and mash. Her two-storey stone cottage in Kirkfield makes an emphatic mark with its flowering window boxes and dark colored roof, giving it an air of rebellion and individuality in the dreary sea of otherwise light gray slate topping the other homes on the street.
